La Vida Hosts Free Market Day
On June 20, 2009 La Vida Regional Cuadrangular hosted a “Free Market Day” to bless the community. A television announcement was made by our video department which aired on the public TV stations in Angleton and Lake Jackson. Evangelism Teams went door-to-door passing out flyers to personally invite folks in the most economically challenged areas of Angleton, Clute, Freeport, Holiday Lakes and surrounding communities.
The “Free Market Day” is a creative approach in executing our outreach strategy which we have modeled around Luke 10. When Jesus commissioned the 70, He shared four key principles to connect with the hearts of the people they’d encounter. First, Speak “Peace” to the House – pray for and change the home atmosphere. Second, Eat & Drink – fellowship, make a relational connection; do more listening rather than talking. Third, Pray for the Sick to be Healed – meet the felt needs of the people. And finally, fourth, Say “The Kingdom of God has Come” – now you have “earned” a right to share the Gospel with openness, credibility, respect and power.
“Free Market Day” was a total church, total community event. More than 60 volunteers helped sort clothes, pre-screen food, and pick up donations from sister organizations such as World In Need and Christian Alliance.
Approximately 92 tons of clothes, shoes, food, books, toys, bedding, linens, and other household items, along with 14 pallets of drinks were freely given away to any who arrived on the church campus the morning of the 20th. The event was announced to begin at 9 am, but crowds started gathering early and enough of the items had been staged for distribution so that at 8 am we began letting the community in to receive some much needed relief in the most basic of human necessities – food and clothing. By 11:30 a.m. all items were given away and clean up had started!
As we were setting up for the event, a very skeptical neighborhood father came to check us out. He had been very closed off to our evangelism teams, but somehow ended up at the event. When he saw the magnitude and quality of the goods we were freely giving away he was so impacted that he didn’t even take anything for himself, but jumped up into the truck, started operating the gate lift, hauling boxes, helping others to their cars loaded up with goods. He was truly touched and couldn’t believe that there were no strings attached – just pure love and compassion being poured out on the community.
We estimate nearly 3000 people were able to come and receive that morning. Our friends at World In Need came to support the event and were so moved by the incredible turnout that they rushed back to their base and loaded another 26 foot truck full of water. When the announcement was made that a truck full of water was coming, everyone found a shady spot, waited patiently, and called their family and friends to come back. We’ve never seen people so grateful and joyful to receive the simplest thing – two cases of water!
And the spiritual harvest??? During the week of flyer distribution the Evangelism Teams were able to lead 6 people to the Lord. One person accepted Christ as he drove with the team to pick up pallets of drinks from Christian Alliance. We had a prayer booth set up at the entrance/exit to the event. We freely distributed Bibles and Christian literature. Five more salvations came during the event as people stopped for prayer and to receive a Bible!!
But that’s not the end of the story…”Free Market Day” was also strategically planned to coincide with Fathers Day. We distributed Fathers Day special service and dinner invitations at the event. The largest gathering La Vida Regional Cuadrangular has yet to experience came the day after “Free Market Day”. There were 256 people in attendance on Sunday, and more importantly…19 more salvations!!!
We cannot express with words adequately enough the feelings of triumph, joy and awe in what Father did to expand His Kingdom when we all – La Vida Regional, World In Need, Christian Alliance, and LIFE Church worked together in unity to touch their community! Thank you Father for an incredible harvest season!
